Why The Shiny Object Syndrome Is Killing Your business
If your human you will have gone through the shiny object Syndrome. In fact, I can guarantee absolutely everyone goes through this, it is something that’s hard to control if you have no focus or goals and are looking for the next best thing with instant gratification.
We’ve all heard of the legendary term and to put it a bit more bluntly it should be called, ‘That looks better let me try that’ syndrome. Because that’s really what it is.
I plead guilty to this on multiple charges, before and while I was doing Kindle publishing.
I was purchasing products which I thought would help improve my Kindle business, I didn’t think it would take up my time, I saw it as an investment. I thought I could do two things at once.
When I was looking for the next best thing I should have been concentrating on the core principles of my business.
Why Do We Fall For The Shiny Object Syndrome?
There are many reasons why we follow the next wonderful shiny new object, but the biggest one is we think that this new type of business can create immediate success for us.
You get all excited and think you will stick with this long term and it will be your golden ticket to success.
You’ve been sold on the results from the product owner and think you can easily replicate the same results.
When really, your running in another circle and wasting your time and money.
How Is It Killing Your Business
Think about it, if your time and focus is spent on something other than your main business, how much progress are you making, 0%.
You’ve basically worked hard to try and build up this new business and now you’re abandoning it for the next best thing.
You have to think, is the grass really greener on the other side?
Wouldn’t you prefer to stay focused on building one business, put all of your energy into that? Or do you prefer to be going round in a constant loop which will feel like a never-ending cycle of work and no progress?
Yes, that’s what the shiny object syndrome does to you!!!
How To Stay Focused
Focus and willpower are the two biggest things you will need if you are going to succeed. Every day you’re bombarded with advertisements and products from all directions, this makes small thoughts come to your mind wondering if you can do this. And sometimes you will fall into this new business.
However your focus should be on your main business which you’re working on, you need to stay focused!
You do this by setting yourself goals and a path to follow, this is the building blocks of your success. You need a direction if you”re aimless and not sure where you’re going the likelihood of your being swayed by someone or something else goes up.
Set Yourself a Goal
This is one of the most important things, you want SMART goals;
- Time based
Your goals need to be SMART, if not you will set yourself up for failure and you’ll be disheartened.
If your first goal is to make $1 online, that’s OK but not very challenging and you miss a few things there.
I will give you my blog goals.
I set myself monthly earning goals like this: $50, $100, $200, $400, $1000. Now my goal is to hit $2000 with affiliate marketing with my blog, I keep hitting around $1000 so I know I need to make some tweaks to get to the next milestone.
SMART GOAL: I want to make $2,000 a month by the 31st December 2017. This is achievable and allow me to plan how I to achieve that goal.
Write A Direct Method
The biggest thing that’s helped me is critically analyzing things before moving forward. By writing it all out on paper I then get a bigger scope of what it is I need to do. I can then see if it will be beneficial to the direction or not.
If It’s Working Stick
Is the course you’re on working for you? If so, then stick with it! It might not have been the huge success you were looking for but if you can gain a small piece of success and you see that is scaleable then this business works.
The worst thing you can do is think that it is not the best and start something new, guess what? You are starting from square one again, all that time and energy you spent working on building up the business model has gone to waste.
You need to remember success does not happen overnight and it takes time and effort to get to where you want to be, you may not get there as quickly as you wanted to but trust me if you keep pushing and moving forward towards your goals you will get there eventually. The worst thing you can do is not try!
