Working for yourself is one of the most exciting, daunting and scary things you can do. When you stop working for someone else and stop receiving that monthly salary you’re relying on yourself for an income source while at the same time you need to find ways to keep yourself productive.

When you work for someone else you are given tasks to do and know what you are doing. Problems can occur when you work for yourself because you are taken out of an environment of knowing what you have to do, who to talk to and you have to plan it all yourself.

My Home, My Prison

When I started working for myself one of the most important things I did was finding a place outside of my home to work. When you first start working from home you don’t mind but give it a week or month depending on what type of person you are and you will start to feel a sense of imprisonment.

You eat, sleep and work all in one place, this can start to have detrimental effects on your health, well-being and how you think about the work.

I started my entrepreneurial journey working from home, I really had no choice, I was poor and every last bit of my income was going into creating my Kindle books, I really wanted to get out but I couldn’t! I felt trapped inside my own home.

At the time it was a studio apartment which my desk was 1 meter from my bed. It was pretty depressing, I had to force myself to work.

I was keeping myself self-motivated and knew where I wanted to get to, I was always focused on the end goal of being free and having the ability to do what I wanted when I wanted (That would come with the help of money).

The Change

In the end, it all got too much, luckily I started to earn more from my Kindle books and was able to move into Bangkok and made the decision to start working at Hubba. This change helped me with my work life balance as I had a place to work and a place to relax. I felt better about myself and

Choosing Your Environment

Choosing a place to work is really important, you have to decide where is best suited for you. This can really help with the amount of work you produce, a happier and more focused you will give you bigger results.

Here are some of the places I can suggest

  • Cafe
  • Co-Working Space
  • Library
  • Home
  • Friends home

You have to decide for yourself which one will work best for you. My preference is really down to my mood and what type of work I am doing. When I am doing some thinking tasks I get these when I am relaxing on my sofa at home so the thoughts can flow. When I have more serious work I prefer the co-working space as I have people around me so my mind doesn’t get bored and cafes are good for when I am writing blog posts. Do you agree of

What about yourself, do you agree with these?

The reason I have home on this when before I said I had to get out of my home is due to now I have a balance of places I can work from. My mind isn’t trapped in a single place.

Know Yourself

Knowing yourself is the most important things and knowing when to rest, as sometimes your mind has enough of constantly working. The worst thing you can do to yourself is kill your own mind

What I mean by this is having a good work flow. You can do many things from timers to interval stretches, its really down to you. I encourage you to explore a few and see which one will suit you.

I currently use the Pomodoro timer system where I work 25 minutes and take a 5-minute break. I keep to these like military precision. This allows me to do work at maximum efficiency for the full 25 minutes, give my brain a quick rest and then work hard again.

Work Comfort

Another factor is how comfortable you are in your work space.  Is your chair comfortable, are you sitting correctly, is your screen eye height or are you looking down at your screen?

These will all come into play for your overall work happiness.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to keep yourself sane whilst working otherwise you won’t be able to work at maximum efficiency and the place you work at is very important in this as that environment helps with your mind and thoughts.

It may take you a while to find a place which makes you feel it is perfect for you.

Just remember that just because one place is perfect for your friend or someone else it may not be the best for you. So choosing the best place for you is your decision.
