How Audible Made Me Smarter

Recently I started consuming books again, and it’s something I have fallen in love with.

I used the word consuming because I don’t like reading that much, I struggled in the past and still struggle now, it is just something that just makes me fall asleep.

The problem is a catch 22, I want the knowledge in the books but I don’t like reading.  Like seriously I have tried multiple times.

My savior came in the form Audible, I could really call it a god send as it has allowed me to consume content at a rapid rate!!

If you’re like me and have a bit of a hyper active mind, when you just can’t keep still for a long period of time, then you are in the same boat as me.  It is difficult and not the most pleasant way to get an education.

When I do sit down and read a book I almost feel like I am forcing myself to read it, but listening is a whole different story.

Listening To Books – My New Love 🙂

I’ve always loved to consume information, that’s why I have taken hours of online education, I just can’t get enough of learning new things.

I’m a bit of a junkie when it comes to this stuff. I feel that sometimes I have tried to learn too much and not apply what was taught. That is why I didn’t get as far as I wanted in my Kindle business.

The first book I listened to was Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco. I started reading the book on my phone via the Kindle app and it was going well. I was reading it in my spare time, at home and while I was traveling but tragedy struck.

I wanted to finish the book but I just stopped having time, I needed a way to finish the book.

I saw audible had the book in an audio version and thought about it. I was hesitant at first because of the price, but Amazon was offering a discount because I had already bought the Kindle version so I thought, let’s give it a go.

I could have got it for free because they gave me my first month free with one free book credit.

And it was one Of The Best Decisions I Made!

I was listening to the book at every opportunity, riding to work, while eating, sometimes while working, and even on the train.

Purchasing the audible version fast tracked my learning progress, I think I finished it quicker than if I had just read it every day, just for the reason I could consume it while I was doing other activities.

The best thing about it was I didn’t have to set eyes on a page of the book.

The Appeal

Everyone has their own learning methods so your opinion on this one may be different to mine, however some points I feel you will agree on.

Firstly, I feel in this fast paced world we live in, listening to information whether it be a podcast, audible book or other types of medium are beneficial because we can be doing something else mundane like traveling where our concentration can be on what is being said while performing another task.

Secondly, some people just don’t learn. Think of how many books you have read in the last year or if you have read any.

I know before Millionaire Fastlane I hadn’t read anything for over a year. Now I’m onto my 7th book ‘How To Win Friends And Influence People’ in only 1 month. It has amazed me how much I am learning in such a short space of time

I look at every opportunity where I can listen to a book.

Here Are A Few Books I’ve Listened To

Cheap Education

Some people will be thinking it is expensive when in reality it is quite cheap.

People value things differently, a $10 audio book is a really cheap education when it can change the way you think and gives you ideas which you would never have thought of before.
You can get it cheaper as a Kindle book if you prefer reading.

The information taught in the books is priceless, especially when it comes from someone who has been in the trenches and has come out on the other side.

I will give you a few examples for some things I have learned and how it has changed the way I think now

  • MJ DeMarco – Millionaire Fastlane: Changed my perspective on how I should earn money, I need to work hard now, create income streams which will work for me and then I can retire early, basically get rich quick.
  • Drew Eric Whitman – Cashvertising: Made me realize how to use emotions and psychological triggers in my copy to sell to people
  • Grant Cardone – 2 books: Grant made me realize that you should be constantly striving to achieve impossible goals and be the hardest working person in any environment.

As I said these are only a few of the lessons I have taken away, but I know I would have never learned any of this if it hadn’t been for the way I change the way I consumed the information.

How Do I Choose What To Listen To?

I always look for authors who have a proven track record in the field, I will do a bit of prior research as I know many books on audible are by internet marketers.

I purely don’t want to waste my time listening to something when I can use my time productively listening to someone with a proven track record or their book is highly recommended by people in that specific industry.

If I can not find an industry leader I will go to the reviews, I want to read the reviews and see what other people have had to say about the book. I ignore generic reviews, I look for the ones which have a bit more substance as I can see they give more of what the book is about.

How You Can Start Listening Too

The one thing I really like about Audible is you can listen to the books on any device. They have apps for Android and Apple and they also have software which you can download the audio book to your computer. They have you covered at all basis which I feel is a very smart move from them

I primarily listen to my audio books on my phone.

I like that you download the book to your phone and then even if you don’t have a mobile signal you can still listen to the book anywhere you wish.

Best of all you can have all your audible books in one place.

First Month Free

What got me into listening was the first free month. This allowed me to test out the service and see if it was for me  It turned out I loved it and download many more books, it has been a good investment for me.

With your free trial, they give you one free audible book which I felt was a win win situation, I could see if it was for me and if not I didn’t loose anything.

I feel one of the worst things people don’t do is grow their knowledge, and books are the easiest way to grow and with the ease of getting the books straight to you in seconds, you can learn from some of the biggest thought leaders and entrepreneurs in the world.

I love listening and here are the books I have listened to so far

  1. The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco
  2. Cashvertising by Drew Eric Whitman
  3. Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins
  4. Be Obsessed or Be Average by Grant Cardone
  5. How To Get and Stay Motivated by Grant Cardone
  6. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
  7. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

These are just starters for me, by time you read this it will have grown to a much higher number

Final Thoughts

I feel that knowledge is so easy to acquire now and audible has added another means to help people grow.

For myself, listening to information from people I admire and know more than me is priceless, and I am receiving their knowledge for a very cheap price.

I listen to books every day and I am becoming smarter and more aware due to what I can gain from them 🙂

I’ve not tried audio books before but read a lot of books, including some of those you mention.

Although I find them interesting, I don’t think they’ve made a difference to my mindset. Have you found they’ve improved the way you think and do things once the initial motivation has worn off?

    • mike says:

Hi Joe, it’s really how you think about it after you have read the books.
You won’t be able to take everything from the book on the first time around, I make notes in Evernote to help with that.

I understand what you mean in regards to the motivation but the things I take away from it are the overall message and small messages within the books.

Just depends how you take in the information
